Following their victory in the Prague Spring Festival Competition and Premio Paolo Borciani in Reggio Emilia, Italy in 2005, the Pavel Haas Quartet soon established themselves as one of the world’s most exciting contemporary chamber ensembles. Performing at the most renowned concert venues around the globe, the PHQ have to date recorded six critically acclaimed CDs, which have received numerous prestigious awards. The ensemble members studied with Milan Škampa, the legendary violist of the Smetana Quartet. In 2007, the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) named the Pavel Haas Quartet one of its Rising Stars, following which they were afforded the opportunity to give numerous high-profile concert appearances all over the world. Between 2007 and 2009, the Pavel Haas Quartet held the title of BBC New Generation Artist. In 2010, the ensemble was granted a classical music fellowship from the Borletti–Buitoni Trust.

Boris Giltburg [piano]

Born in 1984 in Moscow, Giltburg moved to Tel Aviv at an early age, studying with his mother and then with Arie Vardi. In 2013 he won First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, catapulting his career to a new level. In 2015 he began a long-term recording plan with Naxos Records, and has since released solo discs of Beethoven, Schumann and Rachmaninov, Shostakovich concerti with Petrenko and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (Diapason d’Or), and Rachmaninov with Prieto and Royal Scottish National (Opus Klassik instrumental award). Boris Giltburg has appeared with many leading conductors, and with orchestras such as Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, WDR Cologne, St Petersburg Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony. He made his BBC Proms debut in 2010 and has toured frequently to South America and China. He plays recitals in top venues such as Southbank Centre and Wigmore, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Bozar and Flagey in Brussels, Radio France, Carnegie Hall, Tokyo Toppan Hall and Beijing Forbidden City Concert Hall.

About West Cork Chamber Music Festival

The West Cork Chamber Music Festival takes place annually in Bantry, County Cork. For ten days, from the last Friday in June, a world-class line-up of international ensembles and soloists perform an extensive programme of concerts which run from morning to late night. The two main venues are the intimate library of the historic Bantry House, which overlooks Bantry Bay; and St Brendan’s Church in the centre of Bantry. The Festival also includes a full schedule of performance workshops and masterclasses with resident student ensembles, composition workshops, public talks with artists as well as exhibitions and demonstrations from instrument makers.
